Today, the 13th. August, 1915, we the undersigned, lat. class navel lieutenant K. A. Telders, 2nd. class Officer-Engineer H. G. Borghatyn and 2nd. class navel lieutenant J. P. Abbinga, ll serving on board E. M. S. "Tromp" have, acting on a verbal command of the Commanding Officer of that man-of-war, boarded the motors cho mer "Henry S", in order to make an investigation, as far as regards the lst. and 3rd. undersigned, of the cargo, and as far as regards the 2nd. undersigned, of the condition of the motor, and we have found
that:-
That the cargo consists of a number of casks of oil only, According to estimation about 60 or 70, of which 15, arbitrarily selected by us as well as from the upper row as from the lower row, have been opened and minutely examined which appeared to contain nothing else but oil; that also the store rooms have been examined, which appeared to contain the usual ship's necessities, such as cord- -age, paint and ship's provisions, that the motor installed on board has two vertical cylinders, belongs to the so-called "Hotbulb* type, mark "Skandia", factory number 4760, and develops according to particulare 50 effective horsepowers by 375 revolutions; the reversing of the propeller is effected by means of a loose revolving gear; the aft cylinder is started with compressed air or gas, for which here on board carbonic add is used; as a reserve a hand force pump for air is in stock. The carbonic acid bottles (14 pieces) in stock were empty, reason why it was tried to obtain the necessary starting pressure by means of the hard pump. During 1 hour three men continually pumped but the pressure did not exceed 115 lbs. This pressure appeared, when making a new trial, too low and the pressure, on starting the motor, diminished to 80 lbs. in the starting tank.
On examining the aft cylinder the piston appearing to have a crack near the connecting rod pen or about 20 c.m. in cir- -cumference, which in cold condition showed insome places openings
of about 0.7 m.M. A few centimeters lower down there is a crack of
about 5 C.M. in length.
